It started as a way to honor the Santo Niño (Child Jesus), which was given to Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The word “Sinulog” comes from the Cebuano word “sulog,” meaning “like water current,” describing the forward-and-backward dance steps performed during the festival.
